Virat Kohli could not do much damage with the bat as he got out for a single-digit score in the first ODI of the three-ODI series against Bangladesh but he helped India stay in the game with a one-handed stunner to dismiss Shakib Al Hasan at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka .
In the 24th over of the run chase, Washington Sundar deceived Shakib with flight and lured him into a cover drive. Shakib took the bait and could not keep the ball down, or out of Kohli's reach. The former Indian skipper leaped and got his right hand to the ball, almost plucking it out of thin air.
Kohli did not let the ball get out of his hand upon impact. As he celebrated the catch, he looked a bit surprised with his effort like everyone else who had witnessed it.
The acrobatic catch helped India get the crucial wicket of Shakib who scored 29 runs from 38 deliveries. In the previous over, he was looking to accelerate and hit Shahbaz Ahmed for consecutive boundaries.
Earlier in the first innings, Shakib dismissed Kohli and skipper Rohit Sharma in the 11th over. Similar to Sundar, Shakib also lured Kohli into a drive he could not control. Skipper Litton Das dived and took the catch with both hands to leave Kohli shocked.
Shakib was brilliant with the ball as he took a record-breaking 5/36 to help hosts bundle out India for 186 in 41.2 overs. Shakib registered the best bowling figures by a left-arm spinner against India in ODIs. He broke former England spinner Ashley Giles’ record of 5/57 which was created in 2002. Overall, this is the third-best bowling figures by a Bangladesh bowler against India in the format.
India’s 186 all out is their second-lowest score against Bangladesh in ODIs. Their lowest score against neighbours Bangladesh is 105. Apart from KL Rahul, no Indian batter could make an impact. Rahul made into the side as the designated wicketkeeper-batter in absence of Rishabh Pant and scored 73 runs from 70 deliveries including five fours and four sixes.
