Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh reckons that young batter Shubman Gill will need time to rise as a leader. The 25-year-old has been appointed as India's new Test captain after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the longest format of the game. Gill's first assignment as a captain will be the upcoming five-Test match series against England which is scheduled to start from June 20.
Ahead of the red-ball series against England, Harbhajan Singh, who was part of India's 2011 World Cup-winning squad alongside Virat Kohli, praised Gill, saying that he has the capability to carry forward the legacy of the former captains. He also believes that Gill can transfer his success as a batter into the captaincy and just needs some time to rise to the occasion.
“Every captain has the capability to carry forward the legacy. Captains are not made in 1-2 months. You give some time to Gill, and he will rise to the occasion, and you will see how capable he is as a captain. We have already seen him as a batter, that he is 'Gill Sahab the great',” Harbhajan was quoted as saying by ANI.
Furthermore, Habhajan wished good luck to the young Indian team to do wonders in England.
"We hope that India does well once again on English soil. Best wishes to Shubman Gill and Team India. It is a young team but a 'dum waali team'," the former spinner added.
Earlier, Gill captained India in the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe after India's T20 World Cup win. Where Men in Blue defeated the hosts 4-1 to seal the series. Gill has played 32 Test matches in his career so far and scored 1893 runs at an average of 35.05 with five hundreds and seven fifties to his name.
