Gill turned up for the pre-match press conference ahead of first Test against England

Shubman Gill has clearly said that he wants to come out as the best batter in the five-match Test series against England which is set to start from June 20.

I want to play as a batter and not think about captaincy: Shubman Gill

On the eve of the series opener at Leeds, India's newly appointed Test captain Shubman Gill turned up for the pre-match press conference and said that he wants to play as a batter and not think about captaincy while batting.

"When I want to go out there and bat, I want to play as a batter and not think about captaincy that can put pressure on me. I want to be the best batter in the series,” Gill said in the pre-match press conference on June 19.

He also said that captaining the country is the biggest honour anyone can get.

"Captaining the country is the biggest honour anyone can get. After Virat bhai retired, me and GG bhai had a discussion about me batting at that number,” he added.

Recently India's vice captain Rishabh Pant revealed that Gill will come to bat at Virat Kohli's no.4 spot in the series.

“There is still discussion going on who will bat at No 3. Shubham will go in at No 4 and I will bat at 5,” said Pant, in the pre-match press conference on June 18.
