England batters literally toyed with Indian pacer Prasidh Krishna on Day 3 of the second Test at Edgbaston. Prasidh Krishna has experienced a massive dip in his performance in the initial two Test matches of the series against England. But his rough outing in the second Test in Birmingham marked a low point in his career.
Despite the backing he has received from selectors and team management, the tall Karnataka bowler is yet to showcase a compelling performance for India in the red-ball format since his debut against South Africa in December 2023. He was favored for his ability to hit the deck hard and bowl with considerable pace.
However, Krishna has struggled with his accuracy, often bowling with inconsistent lines and lengths, which has resulted in a high economy rate in the limited Test matches he has played. In the first Test against England at Headingley in Leeds, he conceded 128 runs in the first innings and 92 in the second, while taking 3 and 2 wickets respectively, with economy rates of 6.40 and 6.13.
Following the match, Krishna expressed his determination to improve his economy. He seemed to have made a positive start in the Edgbaston Test, conceding only 20 runs in his initial five overs. However, his progress was disrupted when English wicketkeeper-batsman Jamie Smith dominated him in the 32nd over in the second Test, resulting in Krishna conceding 23 runs in that single over.
Most expensive over for India in Tests since 2000:
27 runs - Harbhajan Singh vs Pakistan, Lahore, 2006
25 runs - Munaf Patel vs West Indies, Basseterre, 2006
24 runs - Karn Sharma vs Australia, Adelaide, 2014
23 runs - Prasidh Krishna vs England, Birmingham, 2025*
22 runs - Irfan Pathan vs Pakistan, Faisalabad, 2006
Before the lunch break, in a spell of 8 overs, Krishna conceded 61 runs, resulting in an economy rate of 7.62, and he was unable to take any wickets. His current Test cricket economy rate stands at 5.28, which is the highest among all pace bowlers who have bowled at least 500 balls throughout the 148-year history of Test cricket.
Worst Economy Rate in Tests (Min. 500 Balls):
5.28 - Prasidh Krishna
4.77 - Varun Aaron
4.66 - Zahir Khan
4.63 - Aamer Jamal
4.59 - Nahid Rana
Talking about the match, Jamie Smith and Harry Brook rescued England after they were left reeling at 84/5 while replying to India's mammoth 587. Both Smith (143*) and Brook (113*) cracked spellbinding centuries to take England to a strong 313/5 as of 62.2 overs.
