Shubman Gill brought up a well-deserved century during the first day of the Edgbaston Test against England. The Indian captain remained calm throughout his knock and returned back to the dugout unbeaten on 114. Ravindra Jadeja also assisted him well with his inning of 41 that helped the visitors in capping off the first day in a strong position on 310/5.
Gill has so far been incredible as India's new No.4 in Tests
Gill has so far been quite successful in replacing Virat Kohli as India's new No.4 in Test cricket. The 25-year-old has already got two centuries under his name in the ongoing series and if he continues to go like this, then he can very well go on to break numerous records.
However, despite his success at the No.4 spot in the batting order, former England captain Naseer Hussain feels that Gill should bat at No.3. Hussain believes that the India captain is a 'natural number three' and even decided to namedrop Joe Root in his verdict.
"I think some people are just like that, he looks like a natural number three," Hussain said on Sky Sports.
"He's doing what, you know, England have done with Joe Root. I've often thought you've had lesser players than Joe Root at number three and you've had your best player at number four and he looks like a natural number three to me, Shubman Gill, but the pressure of captaincy and just also away from home when the ball has moved around, he has been found wanting a little bit, so just to come in when the ball stops moving around, but I thought he was really composed today, it was old-fashioned batting, he had to get in, grind out a score and then cash in in the last session," he added.
Meanwhile, Gill had also scored a valiant century in the first Test of the England series at Headingley. His knock of 147 was crucial to the visitors in posting a mammoth total of 471 in their first innings. The batter now has seven hundreds under his belt in red-ball cricket and will be looking to increase his tally as the series progresses.
It will be interesting to see how far will the partnership of Gill and Jadeja be able to take the Men in Blue in the second Test. Gill & Co. suffered from batting collapses in both of their innings in the first Test so they will definitely be trying to avoid that and post a formidable first-inning total.
