India captain Shubman Gill scored a fantastic century on the first day of the second Test against England at Edgbaston. He played some highly impressive shots in his unbeaten knock of 114 as the visitors wrapped up the opening day on 310/5. Gill has so far scored a total of 12 fours in his inning and will be looking to increase the tally as he takes the field on Day 2. This was the 25-year-old's second century of the ongoing series and if he continues this incredible form in the upcoming matches, then he will definitely go on to break many records.
Broad praised Gill for remaining calm throughout his knock
Former England cricketer Stuart Broad was really impressed with Gill's batting and stated that the newly-appointed India captain is someone a player would like to play for. He also praised the batter for remaining calm and patient throughout his innings.
"It's been very patient from Shubman Gill so far, and he's got the look about him that he is here for the day. A very calm nature, he looks like the sort of captain you'd like to play for. Doesn't get too ruffled," Broad said on Sky Sports.
"Wonderful. Test match innings. Patient Test match innings from Shubman Gill. He's worked extremely hard for his second century as captain in his second successive Test. He's remained extremely calm throughout, and his team appreciate every single run he's carved out so far," he added.
Gill brought up his hundred after facing a total of 199 deliveries in Birmingham. He took his time on the field and pounced on the loose deliveries from the England bowlers. The knock was pivotal to the Men in Blue crossing the 300-run mark on the first day of the match itself.
However, Gill wasn't the only one who played a commendable knock as opener Yashasvi Jaiswal's inning of 87 runs from 107 deliveries was crucial in steadying India's ship after fellow opening batter KL Rahul had gotten dismissed for just two runs. With the Men in Blue restricted to 211/5 at one stage, veteran Ravindra Jadeja took to the crease and played a sensible knock of 41. The duo of him and Gill formed an unbeaten 99-run stand, ensuring that the visitors do not lose any more wickets and cap off the day in a strong position. It will be interesting to see how things turn out on Day 2 at Edgbaston.
