The stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru ended up claiming a total of 11 lives and also left many injured. The tragedy occurred during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) victory parade which was announced following their IPL 2025 triumph on Tuesday.
Thousands of people took to the streets of Bengaluru to catch a glimpse of the team, however things quickly escalated as the local authorities weren't able to manage such a large number of people. The sheer mismanagement of the local authorities lead to a stampede which proved to be fatal for many.
However, despite the horrible scenes outside the stadium, the felicitation cereemony that was taking place inside the venue wasn't stopped and mostly went as planned.
Compensation for families of the victims was announced by the government and the franchise
Following the tragedy, the government of Bengaluru announced a compensation of INR 10 lakh to the families of all the victims. Soon after, RCB also announced that they will be providing the families with the same amount of compensation. They will also set up a special fund for the fans who were injured due to the stampede.
When asked about the tragic incident during the press conference on Thursday ahead of India's five-match Test tour of England, head coach Gautam Gambhir stated that there is no need to have such shows if they cannot be properly managed. He further said that even though the fans get quite excited for such events, the lives of common people should be prioritized.
"I was always a big believer that we need not have road shows. I beleived in this when playing. I had the same statement to make even after winning in 2007: that we should not have road shows. Lives are more important and I will continue to say that even in the future," Gambhir said at the press conference.
"In the future, we should be little bit more aware of having these road shows. We can probably have these road shows in closed doors. We shouldn't have done that. Fans do get excited. Fanbases get excited. But, nothing is more important than human lives. You can't, at any point, lose 11 people. For me, the road show should not have happened," he added.
The Indian team's assignment against England is set to commence from June 20. The series will be quite important for both the teams as it will also kick-off the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
