Shubman Gill was recently appointed as India's new Test captain following the sudden retirement of former skipper Rohit Sharma. The 25-year-old will now be leading the team in the upcoming five-match Test assignment against England which will begin from June 20. The first match of the much-awaited series is set to be played at Headingley in Leeds.
The Indian team hasn't won a Test series on English soil since 2007
Gill, who has previously captained the Men in Blue in T20Is, will be leading the team in Test cricket for the first time ever. The gruelling tour against England may turn out to be quite pressurizing for the newly-appointed captain as India haven't been able to record a Test series triumph on English soil since 2007. The onus will be on Gill to perform well not only as batter, but as a leader too.
Ahead of the beginning of Gill's most important Test series, former England captain Michael Vaughan gave his opinion on the Indian team management trusting a youngster and handing him the captain's armband.

“Shubman Gill is officially the new face of Indian Test cricket, stepping up as captain for the England series. It’s a bold move, trusting a young leader with a new-look team after the retirements of giants like Rohit and Kohli. Gill has a lot to prove, especially away from home, but he has shown he has the temperament for big moments,” Vaughan told Sony Sports Network.
Vaughan also stated that it wouldn't be a surprise if India's young guns end up performing exceptionally well in the series against England and further added that the tour could be the start of something special for the Men in Blue.
“With Rishabh Pant as his deputy and a squad eager to make their mark, this England tour could be the start of something special for India’s next generation. Don’t be surprised if these youngsters rise to the occasion,” he added.
Meanwhile, Gill has played 32 Test matches in his career so far and has scored a total of 1893 runs. The batter has seven fifties and five centuries under his belt in the format and will be looking to increase his tally in the England series. He will also be looking to improve his average of 35.05 in red-ball cricket with his first-ever assignment as the side's captain.
