After the high of 4-0 T20I series win, Harry Brook’s England got a reality check in the ODI series opener on July 14. At Edgbaston, Birmingham, England suffered a batting collapse, recovered and posted a below par total. India chased down the target with six wickets in hand and plenty of deliveries to spare. After the defeat, former England pacer Stuart Broad felt that the hosts played like they are placed in the ICC Men’s ODI team rankings. Currently, England are placed eighth in the ODI rankings.

"England are eighth in the world rankings and are playing like they are eighth," Broad told Sky Sports Cricket. "They need to get more experience into the roles of the players."
The eighth-placed England have been advised by Broad to make one change to the bowling attack. He wants an extra seamer who can take wickets in the middle overs. He believes that getting an extra seamer will align with what they want to achieve in terms of preparation for the ODI World Cup 2027.

"After defeat at Edgbaston, there might be a shift in mindset towards playing another seamer," he added.
"Looking ahead to the next World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, it's going to be the faster, taller bowlers who do the damage there.”
In order to qualify for ODI World Cup 2027, England will need to remain in top eight at the time of cutoff to get automatic qualification. If they slip to ninth place, they will have to play qualifiers for ODI World Cup 2027 spot.
Pacers take one each, spinners wicketless in Birmingham
Josh Tongue made his ODI debut and claimed the wicket of KL Rahul in the middle overs. Sam Curran broke the opening partnership with Rohit Sharma's wicket whereas Jofra Archer trapped Virat Kohli in front of the wickets.
None of the England spinners were able to take a wicket. Adil Rashid bowled 5.2 overs, conceded 34 runs. Liam Dawson bowled just two overs and conceded 10 runs. Will Jacks was inconsistent with his line and went for 43 runs in seven overs whereas Jacob Bethell bowled just one over, conceded 10 runs.
Carse to walk into the XI
On the day of the ODI series opener, Brydon Carse was added to the squad. Carse is likely to play in the second ODI after recovering from an injury and proving his match fitness in three T20 Blast games for Durham. The second ODI is scheduled to be played on July 16 in Cardiff. England may look to add Carse in place of a spinner or spin-bowling all-rounder.
