4-time IPL-winning all-rounder announces retirement from Indian cricket

Experienced all-rounder Karn Sharma has announced his retirement from international cricket and Indian domestic cricket. The Uttar Pradesh-born cricketer will goodbye to all forms of Indian cricket after the Uttar Pradesh T20 League 2026 match for Kanpur Superstars on August 25. He made the announcement after Superstars’ clash against Meerut Mavericks.

"I now want to retire... I am extremely grateful to my family, BCCI, Railways, UPCA, Andhra, Vidarbha Cricket Association and everyone who has supported me throughout this journey," Karn said. "After this, I will be available for coaching and other responsibilities related to the game of cricket."

Karn, a 4-time IPL winner

Karn has been a four-time Indian Premier League (IPL) winner. He made his debut for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in 2013. He won the IPL 2016 with them. Then, he moved to Mumbai Indians (MI) and won the title with them as well. He played four seasons for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and they won two seasons in 2018 and 2021. He moved to RCB and then MI. In the previous auction, he remained unsold.

Karn has played 90 IPL games, claiming 83 wickets at an average of 26.88, featuring two four-fers. He scored just 352 runs from 41 IPL innings. He had represented SRH in now-defunct Champions League T20 as well.

Also, Karn is in the rare list of players who have won three consecutive IPL titles. The list also features Suyash Sharma and Phil Salt.

Karn’s short international career

Karn made his international cricket debut across formats in 2014. He took one wicket for 28 runs in his only T20I appearance against England. He made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in the game where Rohit Sharma scored 264. The leggie remained wicketless in nine overs. In his second ODI, he remained wicketless again.

He made his Test debut against Australia in Adelaide. He bagged wickets of Australian openers Chris Rogers and David Warner. He registered single-digit scores in the 48-run defeat which feature Virat Kohli's 141-run knock in the unsuccessful run chase.

Karn’s domestic career

Karn had a long domestic cricket career. From 97 first class games, he has 270 wickets at an average of 27.60, including 14 fifers. He scored 2,866 runs at an average of 22.74, featuring two tons and 17 fifties. In 123 List A games, he bagged 153 wickets, featuring three fifers. The left-handed batter scored 1,827 runs, including a ton and six fifties.
