Eighth-placed England were no match for the no.1 ranked ODI side in the world India as they lost by six wickets in the series opener. England spinners were not able to break the fifth-wicket partnership between Washington Sundar and Axar Patel as the two southpaws went on to score their respective fifties and chase down the target of 259 with 4.4 overs to spare. On the day of the first ODI, England Cricket Board (ECB) also announced Brydon Carse’s addition to the squad for the remaining two ODIs. After the defeat at Edgbaston, Birmingham, skipper Harry Brook was asked in the post-match press conference whether Carse’s return will boost the squad. Brook lauded Carse’s commitment across formats, hinting a change in the bowling lineup.

"He's been a very good bowler in all formats for England. He's aggressive, wears his heart on his sleeve. He always comes back for more and never drops his pace. He'd run through a brick wall for you. It's awesome to have him back and he's up for selection for the rest of the series,” Brook said.
On being asked whether he will be an option to replace Jofra Archer or Josh Tongue, Brook and pointed out his ability to contribute with the bat.

“A bit of both, really. He could open the bowling and he's handy with the bat as well and a very good fielder. I think he fits in what he ask for in the side,” said the 27-year-old.
30-year-old Carse has not been in action on the international stage since the last Test of the Ashes 2025-26 series. He marked his return to competitive cricket with three games in the T20 Blast. He claimed four wickets from three appearances this month before getting a place in the squad.
Carse’s ODI numbers
Carse's previous ODI appearance was against New Zealand in November 2025 where he bagged just one wicket. He has played four ODIs against India and taken just two wickets, averaging 83.50. His economy rate is just over 7 runs per over against India in the format.
So far, Carse has played 30 ODIs and claimed 34 wickets at 40.44 apiece. His only fifer came against Pakistan in his debut ODI series in 2021. He averages 17.60 with the bat, scoring 264 runs from 21 innings.
Who will Carse replace in playing XI?
The second ODI of the series will be played on July 16 at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff. After the defeat in series opener, legendary England pacer Stuart Broad wants Brook to add an additional seamer in the lineup. He can replace either Will Jacks or Liam Dawson. If they opt to make changes in the pace lineup, he can play in Josh Tongue’s place as England are unlikely to replace an in-form Sam Curran.
