Jos Buttler became just the second England cricketer to play 200 ODIs

Buttler achieved this feat during first ODI against India

During the first ODI against India in Birmingham, Jos Buttler cemented his legacy in English cricket by becoming only the second male player from his country, and the very first right-handed batter, to reach the landmark of 200 ODI appearances. By stepping onto the field, the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman joined former captain Eoin Morgan in an incredibly exclusive club, marking a legendary milestone in a journey that began back in 2012 against Pakistan.

Jos Buttler completes 200 ODIs

Buttler's international career has been defined by immense highs and challenging transitional periods. After taking over the white-ball captaincy in 2022, he immediately led the Three Lions to glory at the 2022 T20 World Cup. However, his tenure also saw a difficult title defense during the 2023 ODI World Cup, where England bowed out in the league stage with just three wins and six defeats—including a shock loss to Afghanistan. Following the 2025 Champions Trophy, Buttler stepped down from his leadership role, transitioning back into a pure senior player where he remains a vital pillar of England’s limited-overs squads.

While the historic occasion at Edgbaston deserved a fairytale knock, Buttler's milestone match ended in disappointment as he was dismissed for just 5 runs. Despite the quiet outing, his career numbers paint the picture of a white-ball giant, boasting 5,520 runs in his 200 ODIs alongside 4,212 runs in 160 T20Is.

Eoin Morgan leads the elite list

Eoin Morgan holds the record for the most ODI appearances for England, having represented the nation in 225 matches. Across his entire international career, Morgan featured in 248 ODIs overall, which includes 23 appearances for Ireland before he transitioned to England and eventually became the first player to reach the 200-cap milestone for the Three Lions.

Following Morgan on the all-time England list is former all-rounder Paul Collingwood, who sits in third place with 197 caps to his name alongside a career tally of 5,092 runs and 111 wickets. Just behind him in fourth is the legendary fast bowler James Anderson, who concluded his one-day international career with 194 caps after being omitted from the squad following England's disappointing group-stage exit at the 2015 World Cup.

Among active players, Joe Root is the closest to joining this elite company. Sitting at 190 ODIs, the veteran batsman—who now focuses exclusively on the Test and ODI formats, is well within striking distance of becoming only the third English cricketer to achieve 200 caps, bringing with him an impressive pedigree of 7,585 runs in the 50-over format.

On the global stage, however, everyone still chases the ultimate longevity record held by Sachin Tendulkar. The ICC Hall of Famer leads the worldwide charts with an astonishing 463 ODI appearances, anchoring a legendary international career that also featured 200 Test matches and a single T20I.
