Axar Patel is set to lead India's spin attack in the two-match T20I series in Belfast.

India's star mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy got ruled out from India's upcoming T20I series against Ireland on Sunday, June 21. The reason behind Chakaravarthy's absence is his ongoing rehabilitation from a foot injury that he endured during the IPL 2026.

Big blow for Indian team ahead of Ireland series

Varun Chakaravarthy faced heat after bowling his full quota of four overs against Gujarat Titans despite having a hairline fracture in his foot while fielding in a previous game. The incident sparked concerns over the seriousness of his injury and his decision to play despite having pain.

Varun faced a difficult individual outing in KKR's must-win game, giving away 47 runs from his spell of four overs without taking a single wicket. With the team facing a high-pressure situation, the star spinner looked like a shadow of himself, as he was unable to create an impact with the ball.

"Chakravarthy is in the final stages of his rehab at the BCCI COE following his left foot injury sustained in the TATA IPL 2026. He is ruled out of the T20I series against Ireland," confirmed BCCI in their statement.

With no Varun Chakaravarthy in the squad, Axar Patel will lead India's spin-bowling department in the T20I series against Ireland. In Ireland, the Indian team will play T20Is in Belfast on June 26 and June 28. After the conclusion of the Ireland series, the Men in Blue will travel to England for five T20Is and three ODIs.
