Indian cricket team all-rounder Shardul Thakur recently emphasized the complexities and challenges that come with playing Test cricket in South Africa. The Indian squad, led by Rohit Sharma, is gearing up for an intense confrontation with the South African team. Thakur, 32, underlined the importance of understanding and adapting to the unique characteristics of the pitches in South Africa. This strategic approach is essential for the team to set realistic and achievable targets in the game. He stressed that adapting to the surface conditions is a key factor in determining the team's success.
"I think South Africa is one of the most difficult countries to play Test cricket in. Considering the pitch conditions, even if we play all over the country, this is one country where you can't expect what you will get from the pitch, so it's very important to go out there play the game and on the game day, you judge the conditions of the pitch, of the ground, and how it is and put yourself in a position to give your best according to that," Shardul said in an interview with Ravi Ashwin.
Another significant challenge that Thakur pointed out is acclimatizing to South Africa's high altitude. This environmental factor plays a crucial role in how players adjust and perform in the game. The ability to quickly adapt to these conditions could be a determining factor in the team's overall performance.
"Right now, I am just getting acclimatised to the weather, and I also learnt that this is a little high in the altitude. So, on the day when you shouldn't be short of breath, when you're doing some running around or bowling, it's very important to get the feel," Shardul said.
"When you're short of breath, still manage that and bowl out there or if you're batting, running between the wickets, how you can still continue your innings, so that is about one of the most challenging conditions in South Africa," he added.
Historically, India's record in South Africa has been a mix of struggles and triumphs. Since their first Test match in the country in 1992, India has competed in 23 Test matches on South African soil, securing victory in only four of these encounters. Specifically, at the SuperSport Park, the venue for the upcoming match, India has one win out of three matches played there. However, the team is riding a wave of confidence, having recently won the three-match ODI series against South Africa with a 2-1 lead.
