Dinesh Karthik survived a major scare as the on-field umpire's decision was overturned.

Karthik could not make the most of the second chance and departed for a 13-ball 11.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) director of cricket and head coach Kumar Sangakkara was left disappointed and furious by third umpire Anil Chaudhary's decision in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 eliminator against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Sangakkara was seen asking explanation as the third umpire overturned on-field umpires’ decision to adjudge Dinesh Karthik out.

Karthik walked out to bat in the 15th over when Rajat Patidar was dismissed by Avesh Khan for a 22-ball 34. On the first ball, Karthik missed a full and straight delivery. The ball hit his pad and the umpire’s finger went up straight away. The wicketkeeper was not sure whether he had hit the ball and opted for DRS after a discussion with Mahipal Lomror.

While there seemed to be a clear gap between bat and ball, the ultraedge showed a spike when the ball passed the bat. It may have been possible that the spike was a result of the bat hitting the pad and not the ball.

No cameo from Karthik

Karthik would have registered his 19th duck of IPL career. A few overs earlier, an out-of-form Glenn Maxwell equalled his record for most ducks in IPL with a golden duck against Ravichandran Ashwin.

The wicketkeeper-batter struggled to time the ball. In the 17th over, he played a cheeky shot to hit a boundary off Sandeep Sharma. However, he could not contribute with a cameo and was dismissed for a 13-ball 11 in the penultimate over by Avesh.

Despite Karthik's wicket, RCB were able to post a fighting total of 172/8 on the board. Lomror scored 32 runs from 17 balls including two fours and as many sixes. Swapnil Singh and Karn Sharma helped push the score as well.

For RR, Avesh bagged three wickets. Ravichandran Ashwin was very economical and picked two wickets. The veteran off-spinner conceded just 19 runs. Left-arm pacer Trent Boult was very economical as he conceded just 16 runs from his quota of four overs. His only wicket was skipper Faf du Plessis. Rovman Powell took an athletic catch to dismiss him.
