The Indian Premier League's (IPL) 17th edition is set to commence on March 22 and will be held entirely in India despite the schedule coinciding with general elections. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal confirmed the news on February 20.
The dates of the general elections are not released yet and are scheduled to take place in April and May. This is the main reason why IPL 2024’s schedule has not been released yet.
In a recent interview, Dhumal said that initially the IPL schedule will be announced for the first 15 days. As soon as the general election dates are released, the schedule for the remaining fixtures will be announced as well.
Earlier, he had told Sports Tak that the schedule of the IPL will be announced in phases.
“We are working on the schedule soon will announce first leg schedule and later the rest of the dates we are in touch with government already we had talks and will again have one soon.”
“Since elections schedule will come later but we have to start initial matches so some matches will be announced soon. Once the election schedule is up will accommodate matches accordingly. If you ask me can tell you tentative dates which is 22nd March and final around 26th May,” he told Sports Tak in January.
Where IPL was held during last three general elections?
It was in the 2009 edition, the whole season of IPL was played in South Africa. Five years later, IPL was held in the UAE partially due to general elections. However, in 2019, the entire tournament was hosted in India despite the elections.
Short window between IPL and T20 World Cup
Days after another IPL season concludes, the T20 World Cup 2024 will begin. India are scheduled to play their first group game against Ireland in New York on June 5, days after the tournament opener between the co-host USA and Canada on June 1.
Placed in Group A, India will take on arch-rivals Pakistan on June 9. They will play their last group stage game in New York against the USA. Then India will go to Lauderhill to take on Canada on June 15.
IPL 2024’s first clash
As it is customary that the finalists of the previous take on each other, defending champions MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will go up against Shubman Gill’s Gujarat Titans (GT) on March 22.
