'Deeply sad day for India': Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir mourn Asha Bhosle’s passing

India’s top cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, joined the country in mourning the death of legendary singer Asha Bhosle, who passed away at the age of 92 in Mumbai on Sunday.

She had been admitted to the Breach Candy Hospital on Saturday. Maharashtra’s Culture Minister Ashish Shelar confirmed the news outside the hospital. Her last rites will take place at Shivaji Park on Monday at 4:00 pm.

How Sachin Tendulkar on Asha Bhosle's demise

Sachin, who shared a close bond with Asha Bhosle, posted an emotional message on social media, saying he will always remember her through her songs.

"A deeply sad day for India, and for music lovers across the world. For us, Asha Tai was family. Today, words feel too small for the loss we feel. One moment the heart falls silent, and the next, it drifts through the countless melodies she gifted all of us," Sachin wrote on X.

 

"It feels as though time itself has paused. Yet through her eternal songs, she will remain timeless forever. Thank you, Tai, for filling our lives with warmth, grace, and unforgettable music. We will miss you beyond words, Asha Tai," he added.

Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir on Asha Bhosle's demise

Virat, who is currently playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2026, also paid tribute on Instagram. He wrote, "Rest in peace, Asha Bhosle Ji. Your voice touched millions and will live on forever in our hearts. Om Shanti."

India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir also shared a message on X, remembering her legacy. "Saddened by the demise of legendary Asha Bhosle Ji. Her elegance and incomparable talent will always remain in our memories!"

Asha Bhosle's decorated music career

Asha Bhosle, one of the most respected singers of her time, started her career with the Marathi film Majha Bal in 1943. She became famous for many iconic songs like Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko, Do Lafzon Ki Hai Dil Ki Kahani, Kya Ghazab Karte Ho Ji, O Haseena Zulfonwale Jane Jahan, and Ye Ladka Hai Allah Kaisa Hai Diwana. She sang not just in Hindi, but in around 20 Indian and international languages.

In 2006, she shared that she had recorded nearly 12,000 songs in her career. Over the years, she worked with some of the biggest music composers like Shankar–Jaikishan, R. D. Burman, O. P. Nayyar, Ilaiyaraaja, Bappi Lahiri and A. R. Rahman.

She received many honours during her long career, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan, one of India’s highest civilian awards.
