Manoj Tiwary significantly contributed for Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) in Indian Premier League (IPL) from 2010 to 2013 with his impressive batting. The memory is still vivid in everyone's memory when Manoj Tiwary's decisive boundary off Dwayne Bravo in the 2012 IPL final against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, secured KKR's first-ever IPL title.
Manoj Tiwary-Gautam Gambhir's dressing room scuffle
Despite his contributions, Manoj Tiwary's tenure with the team ended prematurely after a significant altercation with then-captain Gautam Gambhir in the dressing room, leading to his departure from the franchise after the 2013 season.
This shocking revelation came shortly after Tiwary concluded his Ranji Trophy career at Eden Gardens, where he captained Bengal to a victory over Bihar in their last league match.
Manoj Tiwary recalls big fight with Gambhir
In an interview with Anandabazar Patrika, the 38-year-old Tiwary opened up on his big fight with Gambhir, who has since taken on a mentorship role at KKR, an incident that had remained undisclosed until then. Tiwary suggested that if not for this clash, he might have enjoyed an extended run with KKR, potentially with financial benefits, although he expressed no regrets over the turn of events.
“During my time at KKR, I had a big fight with Gambhir in the dressing room. That never came to light. KKR became the champion in 2012. At that time, I managed to hit four, so the team won. I got a chance to play for KKR one more year. Had I not fought with Gambhir in 2013, maybe I would have played for another two-three years. That means the amount I was supposed to get as per the contract would have gone up. Bank balance would be strengthened. But I never thought about that," he said.

Previously associated with the Delhi Daredevils (now known as Delhi Capitals) from 2008 to 2009, Tiwary expressed dissatisfaction with the franchise's selection process for their playing XI. He observed that more capable players were frequently overlooked in favor of those who were injured. Disheartened by the scarcity of playing chances, Tiwary requested the team management to let him go, a decision that ultimately resulted in the termination of his contract.
“Gary Kirsten was the coach when I played for Delhi Capitals. I was seeing in front of my eyes in one match after another that the first eleven was not going well. The combination is not correct. Eligible cricketers were not getting a chance to play. Many were out due to injuries. The results of the team were not good. I went straight and said, leave me if you can't put me in the XI. My contract then was ₹2.8 crore. I never thought that if I said this, they would misunderstand me and leave me. Never thought of my loss,” Tiwary added.
Over his IPL tenure, Tiwary appeared in 96 matches, with his final game in 2018, accumulating a total of 1686 runs that included seven half-centuries.
