The 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) season has finally come to an end with debutants Gujarat Titans (GT) etching their name in history books as the champions in their very first season in the cash-rich cricket league. Facing inaugural champions Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the ultimate battle of the tournament, RR skipper Sanju Samson won the toss and chose to bat first, a decision which did not end up paying off.
The side scored a below-par score of 130-9. Jos Buttler, who is this IPL’s leading scorer, top-scored for them yet again with a 39. The Englishman, who equalled Virat Kohli's record of four centuries in their Qualifier 2 game against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), finished the season with 863 runs to his name.
Leading the charge for GT was skipper Hardik Pandya, who shone yet again but this time with the ball. He picked up three wickets and also scored 34 runs as the Titans easily chased down RR's total of 130 runs. Opener Gill remained unbeaten on 45, sealing Gujarat’s victory with a six and 11 balls to spare.
With the culmination of this mega event comes the time to recognise the contributions of some of the individual players in the competition, ranging from the top batters and bowlers to the much popular Fairplay award and the Emerging Player of the Season award.
