South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada created Indian Premier League (IPL) history on April 13 at PCA IS Bindra Stadiu, Mohali. Rabada broke Lasith Malinga’s long-standing record to become fastest to 100 IPL wickets. Rabada achieved the feat in his 64th IPL match with the wicket of Gujarat Titans (GT) wicketkeeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha in the fifth over. Rabada also became the first South African bowler to take 100 or more wickets in IPL.
Malinga held the previous record as the Mumbai Indians (MI) legendary pacer completed 100 wickets from just 70 innings. For India, Royal Challengers Bangalore' (RCB) Harshal Patel is the fastest to 100 IPL wickets from 79 innings.
Rabada is also the fastest to IPL wickets in terms of balls. He took 1,438 balls to reach the milestone to break Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend Dwayne Bravo's record. Bravo did it from 1,619 balls.
Rabada made his IPL debut in 2017. He took 76 wickets from 50 games at an average of 20.52 and an economy rate of 8.21 runs per over. The Proteas pacer was picked for Rs 9.25 crore by PBKS in IPL 2022 mega auction after an intense bidding war with GT.
Rabada replaced Australian pacer Nathan Ellis in the side. Ellis remained wicketless in the previous game against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in three overs he bowled. However, he delivered an exceptional performance of 4/30 against Rajasthan Royals last week.
Rabada was expensive in the latter half of the game. He conceded 36 runs from his quota of four overs. PBKS ended up on the losing side as Rahul Tewatia finished the run chase with a boundary off the penultimate ball off IPL history's most expensive bowler Sam Curran.
Kings will face Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their next encounter at Ekana Cricket Stadium on April 15. With two wins from four games, they are currently placed sixth on the points table.
