The most successful franchise in Indian Premier League (IPL) history had a similar strategy to that of Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the auction. They went all out after Australian all-rounder Cameron Green and roped him in for Rs 17.50 crores after a fast-paced bidding war. Green was expected to be one of the most expensive players in the auction after he hit a 19-ball half-century against Rohit Sharma-led India earlier this year.
After spending big on Green, MI were spectators for a better part of the auction. They got Australian pacer Jhye Richardson for his base price. Also, they placed their trust in leggie Piyush Chawla for him they did not need to raise their paddle more than once. They followed it up with multiple buys for Rs 20 lakh.
With five IPL trophies in their cabinet, Mumbai Indians (MI) are the most successful franchise in the cash-rich league history. Under Rohit's captaincy, Mumbai lifted the IPL trophy in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. The Mumbai-based franchise finished in 5th position on three occasions - 2008, 2016 and 2018. Legendary players like Sachin Tendulkar, Lasith Malinga, Sanath Jayasuriya and Zaheer Khan among others have played for Mumbai Indians in the IPL.
One of the vital cogs in MI's title-winning campaigns, Kieron Pollard announced his retirement earlier in the year. In the trading window, Mumbai traded for Australian left-arm pacer Jason Behrendorff. Overall, Mumbai released 13 players from their squad.
