With Team India scheduled to play multiple big-ticket ICC events, including the World Test Championship (WTC) final and ODI World Cup later in the year, Indian cricketers are expected to manage their workload in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL). According to a report in The Indian Express, dashing batter Suryakumar Yadav will lead the most successful IPL franchise Mumbai Indian if Rohit Sharma skips a few matches owing to workload management.
Rohit Sharma is the most important member of the Indian squad as the Hitman is the captain of the senior men's national team. The 35-year-old has struggled with injuries as he has grown older and the likelihood of Rohit being cautious in the cash-rich league is significant.
After the completion of the India versus Australia ODI series, Rohit said that all players have been given 'indications' about workload management but later affirmed that the decision is up to the individuals and the franchise.
"I mean, it's all up to the franchises now," the Indian skipper had said.
"The franchises own them (players) now, so we've given some indications or some kind of borderline kind of thing to the teams. But at the end of the day it's up to the franchise and, most importantly it's the players you know, they have to take care of their own body.
"They (players) are all adults. So they have to look after their body and just if they feel that it's getting a little too much, they can always talk about it and have a break in one or two games. I doubt (if) that will happen but," Rohit, who will lead the Mumbai Indians said.
The injury list in the Indian team has grown exponentially in the last three-four years with players playing cricket throughout the year. Premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah and middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer are already out of the upcoming edition of the cash-rich tournament with their respective injuries.
