Indian batter Mayank Agarwal will lead the Punjab Kings franchise in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. The Punjab-based franchise will start their IPL 2022 campaign against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on March 27.

While talking about Punjab Kings, former Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar expressed that he does not think Punjab Kings “have an impact player in their squad but this can benefit the team as well.”

Gavaskar speaks

"Punjab Kings is one of those teams that have not managed to win the IPL. This time, I don't think they have an impact player in their squad but this can benefit the team as well. When there are very low expectations, there is very less pressure and when the pressure is less, the players are freer in their approach," Gavaskar told Sports Tak.

"In that aspect, I think Punjab Kings can surprise a few. Will they win the trophy? I doubt that. See, this is a T20 format and you have to be in that consistent cycle of winning," the 72-year-old former batsman further said.

Mumbai Indians franchise led by Rohit Sharma will have Delhi Capitals (DC), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Rajasthan Royals (RR), and Lucknow Super Giants in Group A of the 2022 edition of IPL.

On the other hand, Group B is comprised of defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Sunrises Hyderabad (SRH), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Punjab Kings, and Gujarat Titans.

Two new entrants

With the addition of two new teams, this year’s IPL will have 10 teams vying for the prestigious trophy. Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are the two new entrants.

Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya will lead the Gujarat-based franchise in the 15th edition of the IPL and on the other hand, Indian batsman KL Rahul will be the skipper of LSG.
