Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) had a forgettable outing in their Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign opener against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on March 29. Chasing a massive target of 211, SRH’s star-studded top-order crumbled against Royals’ new-ball bowlers Trent Boult and Prasidh Krishna to equal an embarrassing IPL record which was created in the second edition of the tournament.

As SRH top order collapsed, they could manage to score just 14 runs during the fielding restrictions. SRH’s 14/3 is the joint-lowest powerplay total. In IPL 2009, Royals could manage just 14/2 against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RR) in a league clash. SRH will rise to the top on the unwanted list as they lost one more wicket compared to Royals.

Skipper Kane Williamson scored two runs off seven deliveries whereas Rahul Tripathi and wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran managed three-ball and nine-ball ducks respectively. Krishna dazzled on Royals' debut as he conceded just a couple of runs from his three overs with the new ball. He also took the wicket of Williamson and Tripathi. On the other end, Boult bowled the first maiden over of the season. The Kiwi speedster also got rid of SRH's big buy from the auction, Caribbean wicketkeeper-batter Pooran.

The only boundary that came off bat in the powerplay overs was hit by South Africa batter Aiden Markram. The other boundary came off leg byes.

While SRH managed a mere 14 during the first six overs, Royals were 58/0 after the powerplay overs as Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal got early reprieve.

SRH's misery continued as they lost five wickets for 37 runs in the 11th over. However, Markram ensured that SRH don't suffer a massive batting collapse and register their lowest IPL total. Markram got support from IPL debutant Romario Shephered who scored 24 from 18 deliveries. SRH were able to get to a respectable total as Washington Sundar scored a 14-ball 40. Markram held on to one end and got to his maiden half-century in the final over. He remained not out for 57 off 41 deliveries.
