Australia's T20 World Cup-winning captain Aaron Finch who represented several Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises listed out a few big players Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) can release ahead of the auction. While Finch believes that KKR won’t release Andre Russell, he also said that the franchise can get good trade for him.
"Contentious one. Fold. But I think that you could get a great trade. But we know that they are not going to do it. They will never release Dre Rus," Finch told Star Sports in a game of hold or fold (retain or release).
Before Russell, Finch was asked about Venkatesh Iyer who was roped in for a whopping Rs 23.75 crore.
“Rs 23.75 crore is too high for a player who was brought as an opening batter but used in the middle. He didn't really bowl that much for a player playing at that position. I am going to fold,” Finch said.
Finch wants injury-prone Johnson in KKR lineup
One player among the few listed Finch wants KKR to retain is Australia’s left-arm pacer Spencer Johnson. His services were acquired for Rs 2.80 crore after KKR let go of Mitchell Starc. He played just four games and looked out of touch. He was ruled out of the tournament due to injury. The 29-year-old hasn’t played a single game since the IPL.
“I think the best is still in front of him. The more T20s he plays, the better he will get. I am going to hold him,” the former opening batter said.
De Kock and Pandey to be released?
In order to free up a little space in the squad, Finch also wants Quinton de Kock to be released despite his recent form. KKR released Phil Salt but De Kock was not at his best and could not fill the Englishman’s shoes.
Another Indian player he wants KKR to release is Manish Pandey. Finch acknowledges Pandey's contributions but says it is time to move on to the next generation.
Rahul to KKR?
Meanwhile, there are reports that KKR are interested in KL Rahul’s services. Rahul was roped in for Rs 14 crore by Delhi Capitals (DC) in the mega auction last year.
