Following their recent IPL 2025 match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 30, Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer faced disciplinary action from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for maintaining slow over rate during the clash against CSK. Shreyas Iyer was found to have breached the IPL Code of Conduct and was subsequently penalised with a fine of Rs 12 lakh.
The infraction that led to this penalty was Punjab Kings' failure to maintain the required over rate during their innings against CSK. This violation falls under the purview of the IPL's Code of Conduct, which mandates timely completion of overs in each innings.
"Shreyas Iyer, Captain, Punjab Kings has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 49 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Wednesday. As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Iyer was fined INR 12 Lakh," BCCI said in a release.
Despite the fine, Shreyas Iyer likely won't be overly concerned for a couple of key reasons. Firstly, the fine was levied due to a slow over-rate, an offense often viewed as a collective responsibility of the team and, importantly, does not carry the additional consequence of a demerit point against his name. Secondly, Punjab Kings notched a comfortable victory over CSK, a contest in which Iyer himself played a significant role by scoring a match-winning 72 runs off just 41 balls.
The win was largely set up by a sensational late bowling performance from Yuzvendra Chahal, who bagged four wickets for 32 runs, including a memorable hat-trick which helped PBKS dismiss CSK for a total of 190 runs. Although the visitors experienced a slight wobble towards the end of their chase, they ultimately crossed the finish line with two balls remaining, scoring 194 runs for the loss of six wickets.
Following this crucial win, Punjab Kings have climbed to the second position in the league standings with a total of 13 points. In contrast, Chennai Super Kings find themselves languishing at the bottom of the table in 10th place with a mere four points, a result that has effectively extinguished their already slim hopes of reaching the playoffs.
PBKS will next face Lucknow Super Giants on May 4 at the Mullanpur stadium. Meanwhile, CSK will take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on May 3 at the M Chinnaswamy stadium.
