Lucknow Super Giants' mystery spinner Digvesh Singh Rathi on April 1 gave a notebook send-off to Punjab Kings (PBKS) opener Priyansh Arya. Digvesh has been booked for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct. He has been slapped with a 25 per cent match fee fine in addition to one demerit point.
"Digvesh Singh, bowler, Lucknow Super Giants has been fined 25 per cent of his match fees and has also accumulated one Demerit Point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during his team’s match against Punjab Kings at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on Tuesday," BCCI said in a statement.
Digvesh has accepted the match referee's sanction. The Level 1 offence comes under Article 2.5 of IPL Code of Conduct.
Digvesh and Arya were teammates when they played for Delhi Superstarz in Delhi Premier League (DPL) 2024.
Digvesh, LSG's sole wicket-taker vs PBKS
The incident happened in the third over of PBKS' run chase. LSG captain Rishabh Pant introduced Divesh into the attack. Arya was lucky at first as his catch was dropped at slip. On the fifth ball, he went for a pull shot but only managed a top edge. He was caught by Shardul Thakur.
After the wicket, Digvesh pulled out the notebook celebration, similar to that of West Indies' Kesrick Williams. This is the same celebration which irked Virat Kohli. The star Indian batter took on Williams and imitated his celebration after every boundary.
But Arya's wicket did not affect PBKS' run chase as Prabhsimran Singh scored his first fifty of the season. In the 11th over, Digvesh was brought back into the attack and he got rid of Prabhsimran who scored 69 runs from 34 balls. He played a miscued slog-sweep and was caught by Ravi Bishnoi in the deep as part of a relay catch on the boundary.
Prabhsimran's wicket was a consolation. He finished with two wickets for 30 runs in his quota of four overs. Captain Shreyas Iyer's unbeaten 30-ball 52 and Nehal Wadhera's 25-ball 43 not out helped PBKS achieve the target of 172 with eight wickets in hand and 22 balls to spare.
Digvesh in IPL 2025 so far
Digvesh has been part of the playing 12 of all LSG matches so far. He has five wickets from three games. LSG's next match is against Mumbai Indians (MI) at home on April 4.
