Former New Zealand cricketer Tim Southee has decided to join the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as their new bowling coach ahead of IPL 2026. He had previously spent three seasons with the Kolkata-based franchise as a player. He took a total of 19 wickets for the team in the 14 matches that he played for them. 

Notably, Southee had been appointed as a 'special skills consultant' for England earlier this year and even functioned as a bowling coach for the team on a short-term basis. Though he doesn't have a lot of experience in the coaching department, the KKR stint can prove to be quite beneficial for him.

Mysore expresses confidence in Southee

KKR CEO Venky Mysore expressed his excitement on the franchise bringing in Southee into their coaching set-up. He pointed out that the former cricketer has a vast amount of experience and will help in shaping up[ the team's bowling department for the next season. 

“We are delighted to welcome Tim Southee back to the KKR family, this time in a coaching capacity. Tim’s vast experience and technical expertise will be instrumental in shaping our bowling unit. His leadership qualities and calm approach make him an ideal mentor for our young bowlers," Mysore stated.

Southee also shared his remarks joining KKR ahead of the upcoming IPL season and remarked that the franchise has a passionate fanbase and a fantastic group of players. He is also looking forward to working with the team and help them in achieveing success in the coming season.

“KKR has always felt like home to me, and it’s an honour to return in this new role. The franchise has an incredible culture, passionate fans, and a great group of players. I look forward to working closely with the bowlers and helping the team achieve success in IPL 2026," Southee said.

Southee's career in IPL

Meanwhile, Southee had played for five different teams in his 10-season long career in IPL. He ended up winning the title on two occasions, firstly with the Chennai Super Kings in 2011 and then with the Mumbai Indians in 2017. He played a total of 54 matches in the tournament, racking up 47 scalps.
