MI struggling in IPL 2026, missing Rohit’s experience and firepower at the top.

The Mumbai Indians (MI) are set to take on the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in their eighth match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium. MI have endured a disappointing campaign so far, finding themselves in the penultimate spot on the points table.

Mumbai’s batting unit has struggled to find consistency this season. To make matters worse, their star opener Rohit Sharma sustained a hamstring injury during the April 12 clash against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and has yet to return. As the SRH clash approaches, the big question remains—will the former India captain feature in tonight’s game?

Update on Rohit Sharma’s availability

As per a report from the Press Trust of India, a source close to MI has revealed that Rohit is making steady progress in his recovery. However, a final decision on his participation will only be taken at the toss.

"Rohit has continued to progress, but any call on his involvement in Wednesday's game will be taken at the toss,” a MI source told the PTI.

This indicates that uncertainty still surrounds Rohit’s availability, with the team management likely to assess his fitness before making a last-minute decision.

Why MI are feeling Rohit’s absence

Rohit Sharma’s absence has been a significant setback for Mumbai Indians, not just for his batting prowess but also for the experience he brings to the side. The 38-year-old has featured in four matches this season, scoring 137 runs at an average of 45.66 and an impressive strike rate of 165.06.

In his absence, MI have managed to win just one match, collecting only four points so far. With a net run rate of -0.736 after seven games, their chances of making the playoffs are already under pressure.
