Story Highlights:

CSK have not qualified for playoffs since IPL 2023.

Stephen Fleming served as CSK head coach for 17 years.

Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming has stepped down as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach after a 17-year tenure. Fleming who joined the franchise as a player in the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has helped CSK win five titles over the course of 17 years.

In an official statement on July 13, CSK said that the franchise and Fleming have parted ways mutually after honest conversations with the management following an eighth-place finish in the IPL 2026.

Fleming's statement on leaving CSK

"Eighteen years is a lifetime in sport, and I leave with nothing but gratitude. My time with Chennai Super Kings has been the privilege of my coaching career. I am proud of everything we have achieved,” Fleming was quoted as saying in CSK’s official statement.

"Together, we celebrated unforgettable victories, overcame difficult moments, and built memories that will stay with me forever. CSK will always be close to my heart, and I will be cheering the team on for years to come."

3 disappointing seasons lead to exit

CSK have not qualified for the playoffs since 2023 when they beat Gujarat Titans (GT) in the final under MS Dhoni's leadership to win the title. In IPL 2024, they narrowly missed the playoffs spot after the loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the must-win game. In IPL 2025, they finished at the bottom of the points table for the first time with just four wins from 14 games.

Fleming's legacy

However, Fleming is the most successful head coach in IPL history. Under him, CSK have won five IPL titles. They won the now-defunct Champions League T20 twice. They also reached the playoffs 12 times and played 10 IPL finals.

Fleming gets CSK's gratitute

CSK owner, Rupa Gurunath hailed Fleming as the heartbeat of the coaching unit. The Super Kings franchise expressed gratitude towards the former New Zealand opener. CSK managing Director, Kasi Viswanathan credited Fleming for building a team first culture, making them the most consistent team in the league. He acknowledged his ability to help get the best out from individuals.

Texas Super Kings finish at bottom

The announcement was made hours after Texas Super Kings' campaign at the Major League Cricket (MLC) came to an end. The Faf du Plessis-led Texas Super Kings finished at the bottom of the points table after their loss to Los Angeles Knight Riders.

Also, SA20 franchise Jo'Burg Super Kings have parted ways with Fleming as well.
