Shubman Gill became the second fastest Indian to accumulate 5000 T20 runs after Virat Kohli

Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill clocked a sensational milestone during Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 clash against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley stadium on May 18. Shubman Gill ended up completing 5000 runs in his T20 career. Prior to the match, Gill needed just 21 runs to reach this landmark. He accomplished this feat in a mere 154 innings, making him the second-fastest Indian batsman to reach 5000 T20 runs.

Shubman Gill  reached the milestone of 5000 T20 runs in his 154th innings. On the other hand, Virat Kohli, the highest run-scorer in the history of the IPL, took 167 innings to achieve the same feat in the shortest format of the game.

However, KL Rahul holds the record of being the fastest Indian to reach 5000 T20 runs, accomplishing it in just 143 innings. This places him second overall in the global list, only behind the legendary Chris Gayle.

List of fastest players to 5000 runs in T20s:

143 innings- KL Rahul
154 innings- Shubman Gill
167 innings- Virat Kohli
173 innings- Suresh Raina

Shubman Gill embarked on his T20 journey with Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2018 edition of the Indian Premier League. His international debut in the T20 format for India followed in January 2023. Despite his growing stature in the game, he was not included in India's squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup. However, he subsequently made his debut as India's T20I captain in the series against Zimbabwe, which took place after the ICC tournament.

Just one series later, Shubman was appointed as India's vice-captain in the white-ball formats. To date, Shubman has accumulated 5029 runs in T20 cricket across 154 innings, which includes an impressive tally of 6 centuries and 32 half-centuries. He took over the captaincy of Gujarat Titans (GT) from Hardik Pandya after Pandya's move to Mumbai Indians. While the Shubman-led GT did not progress beyond the league stage in IPL 2024, they have a strong chance to qualify for the playoffs in the ongoing IPL 2025 season.

In the end Gill's impressive 93 and Sai Sudharsan's 108 which helped GT bulldoze DC by 10 wickets and seal the IPL 2025 playoff spot
