Mumbai Indians (MI) put on a show in the action-packed Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 Eliminator clash against Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Mullanpur stadium on May 30. Hardik Pandya-led MI gunned down Shubman Gill's GT by 20 runs to set up Qualifier 2 battle against Punjab Kings (PBKS) which will be played on June 1 at the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad. Should MI end up defeating PBKS in the IPL 2025 Qualifier 2, they will advance to the IPL 2025 Final, where they would face Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for the coveted title.
Mahela Jayawardene on Suryakumar Yadav's injury concerns
During the Eliminator match, there was a momentary scare for fans when star batter Suryakumar Yadav appeared to sustain an injury. However, MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene quickly allayed these fears.
In the post-match press conference, Jayawardene provided a reassuring update, confirming Suryakumar's fitness and his expected participation in the upcoming games.
"As far as I know, there's nothing serious. I haven’t heard anything from the physio. He’s fine. Even if he has to bat on one leg, he will play against Punjab," Jayawardene said at the post-match press conference.
Jayawardene also dismissed concerns about fitness ahead of the crucial match. He assured that the team is in good shape and ready for the upcoming challenge.
"We know it's a tough schedule for us, but I think everyone's healthy, everyone's fit. And don't worry about those little tightnesses. I haven't heard anything from the physios. I'm pretty sure that even with one leg, these boys will be playing for us. Don't worry," he further stated.
Suryakumar Yadav on a roll in IPL 2025
Suryakumar Yadav yet again shone with the bat in the Eliminator clash against GT, scoring a quickfire 33 runs off 20 balls to help MI post a big total of 228, which eventually proved too much for GT to chase down. , showcasing his aggressive batting style. This particular knock marked his 15th score of 25 or more runs in the current IPL season, setting a remarkable new T20 record for the most such scores by a single player in a tournament. Suryakumar has been a standout performer in the IPL 2025 season. He has amassed an impressive 673 runs in just 15 matches, boasting an excellent average of 67.30. Currently, only Gujarat Titans' Sai Sudharsan, with 759 runs, is ahead of him in the Orange Cap race. With the potential for two more matches to play, Suryakumar Yadav needs to score just 87 more runs to claim the coveted Orange Cap.
