CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed Dhoni's availability for upcoming IPL season

The speculation around Mahendra Singh Dhoni's availability for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 has finally ended. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) CEO Kasi Viswanathan has told India Today that they are confident of MS Dhoni's participation in the next season of the IPL.

CSK has achieved remarkable success under Dhoni's leadership, pocketing five IPL titles along with securing two Champions League T20 trophies in 2010 and 2014.

“We are very confident that he (Mahi) will be available and play for us," Viswanathan told India Today.

Dhoni will be eager to make amends following the challenging IPL 2025 season, during which CSK finished at the bottom of the points table for the first time in the franchise's history. Dhoni had to step in and lead the team after regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out midway through the tournament. However, the veteran wicketkeeper-batter, who famously led India to the 2011 World Cup victory, was unable to reverse the team’s fortunes. His role was a subject of much debate, particularly his batting position, as he batted as low as No. 9 on two occasions during the competition.

Dhoni's potential participation in the 2026 season would mark his 17th year with the Chennai Super Kings franchise and his 19th season overall in the IPL. The only seasons he spent away from CSK were the two years during which the franchise, along with the Rajasthan Royals, faced suspension, during which time he played for the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant.

Dhoni's unmatched legacy with CSK

The 44-year-old superstar has dedicated virtually his entire IPL career to CSK, having featured in 248 matches and scoring 4,865 runs for the franchise. The only exceptions were the two seasons when the team was suspended. His longevity and impact are unparalleled; the upcoming IPL season will mark his 17th year with CSK and his 19th overall in the league. Under his leadership, Chennai Super Kings have achieved monumental success, clinching five IPL titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023.

However, Dhoni's fitness and workload management will be a key concern for the Yellow brigade. At this stage of his career, having retired from international cricket in 2020, his only exposure to top-tier competition is the high-intensity IPL. Consequently, the CSK franchise will undoubtedly remain cautious, carefully monitoring his physical condition and managing his on-field responsibilities. Despite the physical concerns, Dhoni’s statistical contributions underscore his value. His recent performance in the previous edition, where he added 161 runs and struck 13 sixes, proved that he still possesses the firepower required for high-intensity cricket. This recent impact builds on a formidable career foundation: in 278 IPL matches, Dhoni has amassed 5,439 runs at an average of 38.30 and a career strike rate of 137.45, including 24 fifties. Beyond his batting, Dhoni's leadership remains his most defining asset. He is statistically the most successful captain in IPL history, having led his teams to an unparalleled 136 wins from 235 matches. His complete captaincy record also includes 97 losses and two matches that ended with no result, cementing his legacy as the league's most accomplished leader.
