Mumbai Indians finished the league stage on the fourth spot on the points table

Mumbai Indians (MI) batting icon Rohit Sharma once again lost his wicket under pressure as his side ended up recording a seven-wicket defeat against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Sawai Mansingh stadium on Monday. After being asked to bat first by PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer, MI's opening pair of Rohit and Ryan Rickelton provided the side with a decent start and formed a 45-run stand.

However, Rickelton lost his wicket in the sixth over and Rohit also departed a few overs later. The latter was dismissed by left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar after playing a disappointing inning of 24 runs from 21 deliveries as MI posted a decent total of 184/7 in 20 overs.

Rohit Sharma hasn't had a great IPL 2025 campaign

With this, the 37-year-old continued his average campaign where he has so far scored 329 runs, striking the ball at a rate of 147.53. Despite playing a few good knocks this season, Rohit hasn't been at his best at all and this was highlighted by former India cricketer Atul Wassan.

"He seems to be a bit disinterested; the motivation, the fire in the belly, has satiated. He has won almost everything, from winning the T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy to retiring from Test cricket. Hence, to motivate yourself to play at this level of cricket every day is a very tough task," Wassan said during an episode of Bails and Banter on the OTTplay app.

"A player needs to have some sort of aim in the future; it could be the longevity and the legacy. No player wants to compromise on the reputation he/she has built and leave fans with bad memories, and this is something which should motivate them," he added.

The defeat saw the Mumbai-based franchise finish the league stage on the fourth spot on the IPL points table and they will now be playing in the eliminator on May 30 where they will be facing-off against the team that will end up in the third place.

Meanwhile, Rohit recently made headlines after announcing his shock retirement from Test cricket. He is now active only in the one-day format as he announced his retirement from T20Is last year following India's triumph in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
