Ruturaj Gaikwad was left gutted after CSK's 8-wicket loss to GT

Gaikwad admitted that CSK players couldn't adapt to the situation, which cost them the match

The disappointment was evident on Ruturaj Gaikwad’s face following the Chennai Super Kings’ crushing eight-wicket defeat at the hands of Gujarat Titans (GT) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Despite Gaikwad’s best efforts to anchor the innings, the team was unable to defend their total, leading to a disheartening result for the home side.

Gaikwad led from the front with a display of resilience, fighting a lone battle to keep his team in the contest. His gritty, unbeaten knock of 74 provided some much-needed stability, allowing CSK to post a competitive total of 158/7. However, his individual excellence proved insufficient against the disciplined approach of the visiting side.

CSK run out of steam against GT

In reply, GT executed a clinical run chase, masterfully directed by their top-order trio. A fluent half-century from Sai Sudharsan set the tone, while pivotal contributions from Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler ensured the Titans navigated the target with ease. The visitors maintained control throughout the pursuit, eventually securing victory with eight wickets in hand.

During the post-match presentation, Gaikwad provided an honest breakdown of the challenging conditions faced at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. He pointed to the surface being difficult to bat on, noting that it was two-paced and offered uneven bounce, which made timing shots a significant hurdle for his team throughout the innings.

We just couldn't adapt to the conditions: Gaikwad on Chepauk pitch after losing to GT

Looking back at the tactical side of the game, Gaikwad lamented the loss of early wickets during the powerplay, which severely handicapped their ability to build a stable platform. He expressed confidence that a total in the range of 170 to 180 would have been highly competitive had the batting unit fared better in the opening overs. Ultimately, the skipper admitted that the pitch was incredibly hard to read and candidly conceded that his side failed to adapt to the specific conditions in time.

"Yes, to be honest, sometimes i hate to assess in that way, but I felt it was challenging. I was holding a bit for the pacers; the pace was inconsistent, and the bounce was up and down. But if we hadn't lost too many wickets, we could've reached 170-180. Not expected to be honest, it's tough to assess the conditions here. In the last three matches, we learned how the game would play out. We had a 60-70% chance in the last two three games, but we didn't expect it to play like this today," Gaikwad said at the post-match presentation.

"We just couldn't adapt to the conditions. In the first timeout, I told Flem that I was trying to be positive and aggressive. But at times, the ball popped out with inconsistent bounce. I told him I was trying to adapt, but it wasn't possible. You couldn't judge, and you couldn't expect it to turn out well. We were lethargic and didn't start well, but we needed to do better. I got off to a good start (10 off 6), I thought I would keep the momentum, but then we saw 3 wickets fall while we were trying to build a partnership. Another wicket fell and I wanted to take my time. For any other pitch I might've rotated the strike better. Once I got hit, I just thought I will take my chances and get some momentum back. We were batting really well, if we hadn't lost two quick wickets, Mukesh would've come in the second innings. But we lost two wickets quickly, which is why we opted for an impact player," he added.

This result marked GT’s fourth win of the ongoing season, which also significantly boosted their standing as they climbed to fifth place on the points table. On the other hand, CSK dropped to sixth in the points table.

CSK will next lock horns with Mumbai Indians (MI) on May 2.
