The 60th match of the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) saw Axar Patel's Delhi Capitals (DC) going down to Shubman Gill's Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Despite posting a competitive total of 199/3 after opting to bat first, powered by a splendid unbeaten century from KL Rahul (112*), Delhi Capitals' bowling unit faltered badly. They were unable to pick up a single wicket as the Gujarat Titans comfortably chased down the target in just 19 overs.
Delhi Capitals' captain Axar Patel attributed the loss partly to the changing nature of the pitch, suggesting that it became increasingly favorable for batting as the game progressed, ultimately making the run chase easier for the Gujarat Titans.
"Obviously, the way they batted, if you don't lose wickets, the chase becomes easy. I thought the wicket got better as the game progressed," Axar Patel at the post-match presentation.
Despite the disappointing result, Axar Patel expressed satisfaction with his team's batting performance which was led KL Rahul's magnificent century which in the end went in vain. In particular, he lauded KL Rahul for his exceptional innings, describing it as a batting masterclass.
"I thought it was a par score, the way we finished, KL was superb, we thought this was a good score," he added.
While acknowledging the positive aspect of his team's batting performance, Axar Patel expressed his disappointment with the showing of Delhi Capitals' bowlers. He further emphasised the need for improvement in their fielding standards. Axar elaborated on this point by saying:
"The bowlers tried hard, but we couldn't win today. The way we batted was a big positive, need to improve our fielding and the bowling in the powerplay. The wicket got better in the 2nd innings, it was stopping and gripping in the first innings, but not in the second. Once a batter gets set, it becomes easier to bat," he concluded.
This won not only guaranteed GT's place in playoffs with 18 points but also helped Punjab Kings (17 points) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (17 points) seal top four finish. GT will next face Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on May 22 while DC will take on Mumbai Indians on May 21.
