On May 10 evening, an immediate ceasefire was announced between India and Pakistan. The ceasefire led to speculations about the resumption of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. While Pakistan violated the ceasefire hours after it was announced, there has been no firing on the border. As normalcy is being restored, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal said that there is a possibility of resuming the IPL 2025 immediately but the schedule needs to be worked out.
“Ceasefire has just been announced. We now explore the possibility of resuming and concluding the IPL. If it is possible to conduct it immediately… We need to work out the venue dates and everything, and we would now be speaking to all the stakeholders, including team owners, broadcasters, and everyone involved and find a way as to how to move forward. Most importantly, we will have to consult with the government,” Dhumal told The Indian Express.
The report also states that the BCCI has informed IPL franchises about its decision to resume the tournament as early as possible. In addition, it wants the franchises to see how soon the overseas players can return.
Matches remaining and possible venues
17 matches are remaining in the IPL 2025 including the two qualifiers, eliminator and the final. Also, the match between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) which was cancelled midway in Dharamsala amidst air raids in neighbouring citiies, is set to be replayed.
Earlier, it was reported that the BCCI has shortlisted Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad as venues for the remaining games. However, following the ceasefire, there is a possibility of games happening at the original venues.
Availability of overseas players
The BCCI will need a two-week window to host the rest of the IPL 2025. It also needs to keep in mind that a few players from South Africa and Australia need to return as they play in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final at the Lord's starting June 11. Also, West Inidies' are scheduled to play England in a three-ODI series starting May 29.
