Punjab Kings took a big stride towards securing a berth in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 playoffs by securing a 10-run win over Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium in Jaipur. However, a major talking point of the match was the tactical substitution of PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer, with Harpreet Brar coming in as the impact player. Notably, Shashank Singh was seen leading the Punjab Kings in Shreyas's absence.
Shreyas Iyer provides update on his finger injury
Meanwhile, after PBKS' win over RR, Shreyas Iyer shed light on his substitution, revealing that he had sustained an injury to his forefinger during a practice session on May 17. Shreyas Iyer further stated that he is currently unsure about the precise nature of his finger injury. He mentioned that he would be able to provide a more definitive update after returning to the dressing room and consulting with the team's physiotherapists.
“The reason is the finger over here (pointing at his forefinger). I don't know what has happened. Yesterday, while practising, I got hit, I will have to go and check what exactly is the issue here,” Shreyas said at the post-match presentation.
Despite a blistering start from Rajasthan Royals' Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who helped their team register the fastest team fifty of the IPL 2025 season, Punjab Kings successfully defended their total of 219 runs. However, Rajasthan Royals once again witnessed their middle and lower order failing to capitalize on the strong foundation laid by the openers.
Dhruv Jurel put up a valiant fight, but ultimately, PBKS' bowling duo of Arshdeep Singh and Marco Jansen held their nerve, successfully defending 30 runs in the final two crucial overs of the match.
"I was just passing on the message to all the players to keep a positive body language. You tend to drop and feel the game has gone away from you, but I am proud of every player out there for showing that sort of great and bold approach," Iyer added.
Harpreet Brar proved to be the decisive factor for PBKS in the match. He delivered a game-changing performance, picking three crucial wickets, including the scalps of the explosive openers Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal, as well as the important wicket of Riyan Parag.
“He has been consistent in the nets. He wants to do the best for himself, he was hungry for this opportunity and today I feel he stepped in and delivered at his best, congratulations to him and his mindset has been tremendous throughout. Absolutely brilliant approach and attitude coming in after the break, the boys were in high spirits and we also needed a rest, going forward in the tournament, it was the right time we came in together and showed the kind of mindset to win irrespective of the situation,” he concluded.
Following this win, PBKS has rocketed to second position in the IPL 2025 points table. Should Gujarat Titans secure a win in their match against Delhi Capitals, it would result in PBKS, GT, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru all qualifying for the playoffs. Looking ahead, PBKS are scheduled to face DC on May 24 at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium. Meanwhile, RR will be locking horns with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on May 20 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
