RCB hence slipped to third spot in IPL 2025 points table

Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) aspirations of securing a top-two finish in the IPL 2025 playoffs suffered a considerable setback following their defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on May 23.  RCB began the game in second place, but their significant defeat resulted in a substantial drop in their Net Run Rate. Following the match, they slipped to third position. For Sunrisers Hyderabad, this marked their fifth win of the season. Despite the victory, they remained in eighth place with 11 points from 13 games. This loss has significantly diminished RCB's chances of a top-two spot, forcing them to now rely on favorable outcomes from other matches to secure a strong position on the points table. This analysis examines how the loss impacts RCB's top-two prospects and what they need to do to clinch a playoff berth.

RCB's defeat to SRH leaves them with 17 points from 13 matches. They still have one remaining game, against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on May 27. However, this loss has placed RCB in a precarious position in the race for the top two. They are now dependent on other teams faltering, as Gujarat Titans (GT) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) also remain contenders for a top-two finish.

This is how the updated IPL 2025 points table looks like:

Gujarat Titans (Q) 13 9 4 0 0 18 +0.602
Punjab Kings (Q) 12 8 3 0 1 17 +0.389
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (Q) 13 8 4 0 1 17 +0.255
Mumbai Indians (Q) 13 8 5 0 0 16 +1.292
Delhi Capitals (E) 13 6 6 0 1 13 -0.019
Lucknow Super Giants (E) 13 6 7 0 0 12 -0.337
Kolkata Knight Riders (E) 13 5 6 0 2 12 +0.193
Sunrisers Hyderabad (E) 13 5 7 0 1 11 -1.740
Rajasthan Royals (E) 14 4 10 0 0 8 -0.549
Chennai Super Kings (E) 13 3 10 0 0 6 -1.030

As far as Orange Cap race is concerned, Virat Kohli climbed from 8th to 6th position after his quickfire 43 runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Meanwhile, Prabhsimran Singh of Punjab Kings and KL Rahul of Delhi Capitals are scheduled to play on Saturday, May 24. Meanwhile on the bowling front, SRH captain Pat Cummins moved up to 8th place after securing three wickets against RCB. His teammate Harshal Patel also entered the top 10, now in 10th position.
