Mumbai Indians slump to ninth place with four consecutive defeats in IPL 2026.

Mumbai Indians (MI) suffered a five-wicket defeat against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Thursday, April 16 at the Wankhede Stadium. The Hardik Pandya-led side failed to defend 195 against Shreyas Iyer's PBKS. Amid all of this, Jasprit Bumrah's form rises as one of the major concerns for the Mumbai-based franchise.

The 32-year-old pacer leaked 41 runs in his quota of four overs without a single wicket against Punjab. It was also seen that the star Indian speedster has been bowling within the average range of 130 kmph which gives a clear hint of Bumrah struggling with some fitness related issues.

Mahela Jayawardene opens up on Jasprit Bumrah's niggle

After the game, MI coach Mahela Jayawardene shed some light on the issue, revealing that Bumrah had been managing his workload because of a niggle carried over from India's ICC T20 World Cup 2026 triumph.

"I think initially because he had a slight niggle which came from the World Cup," said Jayawardene.

Jayawardene further claimed that Bumrah's speed has gone up in recent games and seemed very comfortable with his bowling.

"We wanted to build him up (and) over the last few games his speeds have gone up. We’ve looked at all that so he’s very comfortable. Sometimes, you need a bit of luck as well." added Jayawardene.

Mumbai Indians' underwhelming IPL 2026

Mumbai Indians are currently struggling in the season, sitting in ninth place with just two points from five matches. They started well with a win over Kolkata Knight Riders, but have since lost four games in a row. Their next match is against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on April 20, where they will be hoping to turn things around.

Jasprit Bumrah's remains wicketless in IPL 2026

Retained for Rs 18 crore, Jasprit Bumrah has gone wicketless in five straight matches for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026. So far, the star Indian speedster has conceded 164 runs at an economy rate of 8.63. Many have witnessed a change of strategy in Bumrah' bowling, with a high usage of slower deliveries and a drop in his pace.

Despite his respectable economy rate, Bumrah's form remains to be a concern for the Hardik Pandya led side amid their losing streak.
