Chennai Super Kings (CSK) got the better of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by five wickets at Chepauk to boost their IPL 2026 playoffs hopes. With this defeat LSG's campaign at the IPL 2026 finally came to an end.
CSK eliminate LSG with 5-wicket win
LSG rode on Josh Inglis' spellbinding posted a big total of 33-ball 85 to post a big total of 203/8. In reply, CSK chased down the target with 4 balls to spare, thanks to Urvil Patel's historic 23-ball 65.
CSK jumped to fifth spot with 12 points in 11 matches. Meanwhile, LSG can only get to 14 points if they end up winning their remaining three matches, which won't be enough to seal playoff berth.

Urvil Patel's lightning fifty in CSK's win
CSK ignited their pursuit of 203 with an explosive start, spearheaded by Sanju Samson’s brisk 28 off 14 balls. However, the innings was truly defined by Urvil Patel, who orchestrated a period of absolute carnage at the crease. After a quiet opening delivery, Patel embarked on one of the most destructive batting displays of the season, hammering six sixes and a boundary over his next seven balls. This fearless assault included a stunning sequence of five consecutive sixes, allowing him to reach his half-century in a record-equalling 13 deliveries, matching the historic benchmark set by Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Patel’s strategy was as precise as it was powerful, as he relentlessly targeted the leg side and the midwicket boundary. Both pacer Avesh Khan and spinner Digvesh Rathi bore the brunt of his aggression, conceding three sixes each to the 27-year-old. Despite a missed opportunity in the field when Rathi dropped him on 63, Patel’s whirlwind innings eventually ended at 65. By the time he departed, he and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad had shared a blistering 81-run partnership off just 34 balls, fundamentally tilting the game's momentum toward the home side.
The sheer scale of the onslaught was reflected in the record books, as Chennai stormed to 97/1 by the end of the powerplay—the highest score ever recorded in that period at Chepauk. CSK appeared to be cruising at the halfway mark, needing only 73 runs from the final 10 overs. However, the chase took a tense turn following the departure of Gaikwad for 42 and the quick dismissals of Dewald Brevis and Kartik Sharma. What seemed like a comfortable victory transformed into a nail-biter, leaving CSK needing 30 runs from the final three overs and 10 from the last. Ultimately, Shivam Dube provided the finishing touch, smashing two consecutive sixes in the final over to secure the win in style.
Josh Inglis' 85-run exploits in vain
Earlier, LSG experienced a true roller-coaster innings after being put in to bat by CSK. The visitors enjoyed an explosive start, led by Josh Inglis, who immediately took the attack to the bowlers. Inglis set a blistering tone by taking 16 runs off Akeal Hosein’s opening over, propelling LSG to 40 runs within the first three overs. This momentum carried them past the 50-run mark in just 3.4 overs, equalling the franchise's record for their fastest team fifty—a feat they previously achieved against CSK in 2023.
The early onslaught was headlined by a historic individual performance from Inglis, who brought up his half-century in a mere 17 deliveries. This knock etched his name in the record books as the fastest IPL fifty ever recorded at the MA Chidambaram Stadium and the third-fastest for Lucknow. However, the 77-run opening stand was finally broken in the sixth over when CSK speedster Anshul Kamboj dismissed Mitchell Marsh for 10. Despite the loss, LSG ended the powerplay in a commanding position at 91/1.
The game shifted dramatically in the following overs as Chennai's bowlers clawed their way back. Noor Ahmad struck early to remove Nicholas Pooran, and Jamie Overton dealt a massive double blow by dismissing both the set Inglis—who fell for a brilliant 85 off 33 balls—and skipper Rishabh Pant. The innings further unraveled in the 13th over following a disastrous mix-up that saw Aiden Markram run out for six. By the time Overton claimed his third wicket by dismissing Akshat Raghuwanshi in the 15th over, a once-dominant Lucknow had slipped to a precarious 147/6.

In the final stages, LSG managed to recover enough to post a competitive total of 203/8. The late-innings surge was sparked by an unbeaten 43 off 25 balls from Shahbaz Ahmed, with useful support from Himmat Singh. Chennai’s bowling effort was led by Jamie Overton, who finished with impressive figures of 3/36, while Anshul Kamboj and Noor Ahmad provided vital breakthroughs to restrict a total that at one point threatened to be much higher.
