Mumbai Indians (MI) have suffered a big jolt with just few days to the start of IPL 2025 which is set to get underway from March 22.
Jasprit Bumrah set to miss first few matches of IPL 2025
MI's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is set to miss the first few games of IPL 2025 as his return to the franchise is delayed. The premier fast bowler is still in the process of recovering from a back injury that has sidelined him since January. Consequently, he is anticipated to miss the initial matches of the glitzy league. The current timeline suggests Bumrah will be available to join the MI squad by early April, provided he receives the necessary clearance from the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) Centre of Excellence medical team in Bengaluru. This potential return date means he will miss the three games MI has scheduled for March, as per ESPNCricinfo.

The injury in question is a stress-related issue in his lower back, which Bumrah sustained during the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Sydney on January 4th.
This injury also forced him to miss the Champions Trophy, a tournament India won recently. Notably, this marks the first instance of Bumrah experiencing a back injury since his surgery in March 2023, making his recovery a key focus for both the player and the Mumbai Indians franchise.
During the January squad announcement for the Champions Trophy, India's chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, revealed that the BCCI medical team had advised Jasprit Bumrah to rest for a minimum of five weeks following the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) Test. Given that the Champions Trophy commenced on February 19th, Bumrah was initially included in India's provisional squad. However, his recovery process faced a setback. Upon traveling to Bengaluru for further scans in early February, Bumrah continued to experience discomfort. Consequently, he was ultimately excluded from the final squad for the tournament.
Despite the information regarding his recovery timeline, the precise number of matches Bumrah will miss in the IPL, and whether a definitive return date has been established, remains uncertain. The details surrounding his return are still being monitored by the BCCI medical team.
MI will begin their 2025 IPL campaign with two away matches. Their first fixture is against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Chennai on March 23rd, followed by a match against the Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad on March 29th. MI's first home game is scheduled for March 31, where they will host the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The team's schedule continues into the first week of April with two more matches: an away game against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Lucknow on April 4th, and a home game against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on April 7th.
Jasprit Bumrah's unorthodox bowling action has unfortunately made him prone to back injuries. This susceptibility has necessitated a careful approach to managing his workload. The BCCI medical team, selectors, and the team's strategists are tasked with finding a balance, ensuring he receives adequate rest between series and tournaments to prevent further complications.
