The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has stipulated a mandatory requirement for several Mumbai cricketers to feature in the T20 Mumbai League immediately following the conclusion of IPL 2025 on May 25. Several notable cricketers who represent Mumbai in domestic competitions are currently participating in IPL 2025 for various franchises.

While Suryakumar Yadav is a crucial member of the Mumbai Indians, Shreyas Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane are leading the Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders, respectively. However, as reported by The Indian Express, the MCA has explicitly declared that all Indian players associated with the Mumbai domestic cricket setup will be obligated to participate in the 2025 edition of the T20 Mumbai League. This directive encompasses prominent cricketers such as Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube, Shardul Thakur, and Suryakumar Yadav, all of whom are integral players for their respective IPL franchises.

The MCA has clarified that exemptions from participating in the T20 Mumbai League, which is tentatively scheduled to start after the conclusion of IPL 2025, will be granted under specific circumstances. Any Mumbai player who is selected for the Indian squad for the five-match Test series against England or who is recovering from an injury that necessitates time off will be excused from this mandatory participation.

“All Mumbai’s Indian players have been informed that they have to play the T20 Mumbai League, which will begin after the IPL. It’s mandatory, unless those who have India commitment or injury issues, they can skip,’ an MCA source told The Indian Express.

MCA has further outlined its plans for the upcoming Season 3 of the Mumbai T20 League, with a proposal to feature the current Indian captain, Rohit Sharma, as the prominent face and ambassador of the tournament.

Adding to the incentives for participation, The Indian Express report also details a financial arrangement wherein Indian players will receive a separate participation fee of INR 15 lakhs from the MCA for their involvement in the T20 Mumbai League. This payment will be in addition to any earnings they secure through the player auction process for the league. This financial incentive underscores the MCA's commitment to ensuring the participation of key Mumbai cricketers in the local T20 competition.

“Indian players will be paid 15 lakh separately by the association as a participation fee plus they will earn separately from the auction fees. We are working on the base price and other details,” the MCA source added.

The Mumbai T20 League appears to have enjoyed considerable success in its previous iterations, and even Abhay Hadap, the secretary of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), has expressed high praise for the competition. Hadap revealed that an impressive total of 2800 players have registered for the upcoming tournament.

“The response to Season 3 of the T20 Mumbai League has been phenomenal. The fact that over 2800 players have registered speaks volumes about both the popularity of the league and the undying cricket passion of Mumbaikars. We are thrilled to see such enthusiastic participation and remain committed to nurturing the next generation of cricket stars,” Hadap said in his statement.
