Story Highlights:

Ruturaj Gaikwad admitted CSK “missed out on a few key players” after their crucial IPL 2026 defeat against SRH.

Sunrisers Hyderabad qualified for the playoffs with the win, while CSK were pushed to the verge of elimination.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad reflected on his team’s disappointing defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) after CSK’s Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 playoff hopes suffered a massive blow on Monday. After winning the toss, Gaikwad opted to bat first, but Chennai could only post 180 runs, a target SRH comfortably chased down in 19 overs.

With the victory, SRH officially sealed their playoff spot while also helping Gujarat Titans qualify for the top four of IPL 2026.

Speaking after the match, Gaikwad admitted that Chennai missed a few crucial opportunities during the contest and also pointed towards the absence of important players throughout the season.

"Was a good game of cricket. Was a good T20 pitch, didn't change much. Just missed out on few, but still proud of the boys. Just needed to cash in on the opportunity after the opposition lost a wicket, couldn't do that," Gaikwad said.

"Lot of positives to be honest. Samson has been playing really well for us. Missed out on a few key players. It depends on a lot of factors. Everyone gave their heart out today, proud of the boys," he added.

The defeat has left CSK on the brink of elimination, with the franchise now heavily dependent on other results to stay alive in the playoff race.

CSK suffer major playoff setback despite fighting total

Ahead of the match, there were strong rumors surrounding MS Dhoni potentially making his IPL 2026 debut, but Gaikwad dismissed those speculations at the toss.

Batting first, CSK got off to a decent start as Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson added 31 runs in just 2.3 overs before Samson departed for 27 off 13 balls. Chennai then kept losing wickets at regular intervals, with only Kartik Sharma (32 off 19), Dewald Brevis (44 off 27) and Shivam Dube (26 off 23) making notable contributions.

SRH skipper Pat Cummins starred with the ball, taking three wickets, while Sakib Hussain picked up two scalps.

In reply, CSK removed Travis Head early, followed by Abhishek Sharma’s wicket for 26. However, Ishan Kishan (70 off 47) and Heinrich Klaasen (47 off 26) stitched together a match-winning stand to guide SRH home.

CSK now need to beat GT in their final game while also hoping teams like KKR and DC lose their remaining matches to stay alive in the playoff race.
