Has MS Dhoni already played his last IPL match? Has MS Dhoni silently retired from the IPL? Will Dhoni play his last match in Chennai on May 18? Have we already seen the MS Dhoni's last dance?
Questions Dhoni’s future have reached a fever pitch as the 'Thala' remains absent from the ongoing IPL 2026 season. With over half the tournament completed and Dhoni yet to feature in a single match, fans are increasingly anxious, wondering if they have already witnessed his final appearance in the yellow jersey. The silence surrounding his status has sparked a wave of speculation, leading many to ask if the legendary captain has opted for a quiet retirement rather than a formal farewell.

Uncertainty looms large over MS Dhoni
Dhoni's absence from the ongoing season remains a major talking point as the veteran continues to sidelined with severe calf injury. Although he was expected to miss only the initial phase of the tournament, his recovery hit a roadblock when the injury flared up during a training session.
In his absence, CSK have managed to stabilize their campaign, keeping their playoff hopes alive through a series of steady performances. With only four league matches remaining, the math is simple: the team likely needs to secure at least three victories to progress. While Dhoni has been traveling with the squad since March and appearing in viral social media clips from practice sessions, he has intentionally stayed away from the dugout on matchdays to ensure the focus remains entirely on the active players and their postseason push.

Will MS Dhoni play his farewell match in Chennai? Ashwin answers
The possibility of a late-season comeback has met with some skepticism, notably from former CSK spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. He suggested that reintegrating Dhoni at this critical juncture could potentially disrupt the team's current winning rhythm and tactical balance. According to Ashwin, a return to the field remains unlikely for the legendary captain unless the team's circumstances shift dramatically in the final weeks of the tournament. Ashwin also feels that Dhoni get his farewell match in Chennai on May 18, where CSK will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad.
“If MS Dhoni comes, then the combination will be changed. It becomes very difficult, so I think there are very slim chances [of making a comeback]. If they lose two of their next three games, then he might get a farewell game in Chennai," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
CSK might have started their season on the wrong foot but the Yellow Army staged a remarkable comeback and now they have a real chance to make it to the playoffs. After 10 matches CSK have garnered as many points to sit at sixth spot in the IPL 2026 points table. CSK will now face Lucknow Super Giants twice. They will then take on Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans to finish their league stage.
