MS Dhoni is unlikely to retire after the conclusion of IPL 2025

CSK management wants to keep MS Dhoni as they believe that he is crucial for them to win their sixth IPL title

Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) disastrous IPL 2025 campaign is unlikely to bring an end to MS Dhoni's illustrious career. While it was expected that the 43-year-old would call time on his career after CSK's highly disappointing performance in IPL 2025, the Chennai-based franchise's team management considers him to be crucial for the transition phase to go on smoothly.

Dhoni is likely to play for CSK in IPL 2026

According to a report in The Times of India, Dhoni hasn't communicated any plans to step away from the sport at the end of the ongoing IPL season. He had told CSK that he will make his decision soon, however the franchise feels that currently there are too many loose ends that need to be dealt with. Thus, Dhoni is likely to stick with the five-time champions even after such a poor campaign.

The report further stated that the CSK team management believes that the youngsters need time to settle down and Dhoni's presence in the side is very important if the team needs to put their woes aside and become title challengers once again.

A positive sign for CSK here is superstar wicketkeeper-batter's fitness. The 43-year-old hasn't missed a single match this season and has also performed well as a wicketkeeper. Not only this, he has also elevated his position in the batting order in crunch situations and as the senior-most player in the side, hasn't been shy in taking responsibilities.

Though Dhoni is CSK's current skipper, the captaincy will stay with Ruturaj Gaikwad in the future, who got ruled out of IPL 2025 due to an elbow fracture earllier in the season. Dhoni passed the captaincy baton to the 28-year-old in the previous season and despite the results under him not being great, the management is likely to back him.

The Chennai-based franchise have had a forgetful IPL 2025 campaign as they have managed to rack up just three victories in 12 matches and currently sit at the bottom of the standings with six points under their name. While the side has suffered from injuries throughout the season, they cannot give it as the sole reason why they have failed miserably in IPL 2025.
