MS Dhoni's multi-crore CSK stake secret is out, Chennai franchise discloses 1 lakh share details

Addressing rumors regarding an ownership takeover, Chennai Super Kings has clarified that while MS Dhoni is not seeking a majority stake in the franchise, he is already a minority shareholder. A Cricbuzz report suggests that Dhoni privately acquired over one lakh unlisted equity shares via off-market deals in the team some time ago.

MS Dhoni owns over 1 Lakh shares in CSK

Despite the impressive share count, Dhoni's financial stake represents a tiny fraction of the organization, roughly 0.01% to 0.02% of total equity. The vast majority of the franchise remains under the control of the Srinivasan family with a stake exceeding 55%, while public investors hold over 30 crore shares, accounting for nearly 40% of the total ownership.

Following record-setting team sales across the Indian Premier League—where franchises like Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Rajasthan Royals fetched valuations near the ₹16,000 crore mark—the market value of Dhoni's holdings is currently estimated between ₹2.6 crore and ₹3 crore. Despite recent speculation suggesting MS Dhoni attempted to acquire a 15–20% controlling stake, Chennai Super Kings management has firmly and consistently dismissed those reports. Because CSK is an unlisted private entity, its shares are held closely rather than traded on open stock exchanges, meaning any equity transfers remain subject to internal board approval.

Regardless of his exact percentage on paper, Dhoni’s authority within the franchise remains absolute. As the defining symbol of the team, he continues to exercise major influence over football-operations decisions. He is actively guiding the search for a new head coach following Stephen Fleming’s exit and shaping potential trade targets ahead of the upcoming auction. Even while sidelined by injuries last season, his leadership continued to dictate strategy from behind the scenes. As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on how hands-on Dhoni remains in the dressing room and how seamlessly he collaborates with skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and the new coaching staff.

Reportedly, Dhoni is pushing for an Indian head coach for CSK after Stephen Fleming's departure from the franchise. And the name which the franchise is mulling over is current Delhi Capitals' head coach Hemang Badani. However, there is no official announcement from the five-time champions.
