Mumbai Indians‘ head coach Mahela Jayawardene stated that India’s T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav is not concerned about his individual performance. He praised Yadav for his leadership in winning the T20 World Cup for a record third title.

Notably, T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav scored 242 runs in nine T20 World Cup 2026 outings, including 21 fours and 10 sixes. His best performance came in the tournament opener against the USA, where he played an unbeaten 84* off a 49-ball knock, which is the 4th highest individual score for India in T20 World Cup history.

“SKY is not worried too much about it. He’s a class operator. He’s always going to get there. He has contributed when it mattered," Jayawardene was quoted as saying to PTI on Tuesday.

 

 

What does Suryakumar Yadav want to improve?

Jayawardene further said that consistency is something that Suryakumar Yadav wants to improve while lauding his captaincy in the T20 World Cup 2026.

“Yes, consistency is something that he would want to improve. But I think leading the team the way he led the team and keeping everything together. There were a couple of tough decisions they had to make during the season and in the World Cup, which they did (so) hats off to him. I’m sure he’ll have a good break and join the camp with a smiling face," Jayawardene said.

Suryakumar will now be seen featuring in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 which is scheduled to start from March 28. The stylish batter will represent five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI). The Mumbai-based franchise will start their IPL 2026 campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders in their opener clash at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
