Nita Ambani (C), the owner of team Mumbai Indians along with her son Akash Ambani (2R) and Rohit Sharma (3L) take a lap of honour at the end of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 at Wankhede Stadium.

Highlights:

Rohit Sharma has led Mumbai Indians to 5 IPL titles.

Hardik Pandya's MI have won two out of 6 games in the ongoing IPL season.

Mumbai Indians beat Delhi Capitals by 12 runs on April 13.

Mumbai Indians (MI) owner Nita Ambani got a common request from the franchise's fan during her visit to the Shri Sai Baba temple in Shirdi. The fan asked the MI owner to reappoint Rohit Sharma as captain of the side.

"Madam, Madam, Rohit ko captain karo, Rohit ko captain karo (Madam, Madam, make Rohit the captain, make Rohit the captain)," urged an MI fan.

"Baba ki marzi [ Sai Baba's wish]," Nita Ambani responded.

On April 13, MI registered a thrilling 12-run victory over Axar Patel's Delhi Capitals (DC) at Arun Jaitley Stadium. This was MI's second win from six games and first away victory of the season. Despite the win, many have praised Rohit for the tactical suggestion to opt for a different ball to counter the dew and introduce 'impact player' Karn Sharma.

However, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar who was commentating during the game said that Hardik Pandya should be given the credit as he took the on-field call and executed the plans to choke DC despite Karun Nair's explosive 40-ball 89.

Pandya as MI captain

In the last season, MI made a leadership change by roping in Gujarat Titans' IPL 2022-winning captain Pandya. The star all-rounder who started his IPL career at MI was booed everywhere he went, including the franchise's homeground, Wankhede Stadium. After a traumatic season where MI won just four out of 14 games, Pandya got the support as he helped India lift the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024. He also played a vital role in India's ICC Champions Trophy 2025 triumph under Rohit's leadership.

However, in the current season, MI have lost four out of six games, three of them under Pandya's captaincy as he was banned from the five-time champions' campaign opener.

MI who are often slow starters are currently in the seventh position on the IPL points table. After ending DC's winning streak, they will go up against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at home on April 17.

Rohit yet to fire in IPL 2025

Meanwhile, Rohit's form has been a concern for MI. After a stellar run in Champions Trophy 2025, he has managed to score 56 runs from five games at an average of 11.20.
