PBKS defeated MI by seven wickets.

Punjab Kings continued their winning momentum in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, comfortably chasing down a target of 196 against Mumbai Indians (MI).  The win was powered by an unbeaten 80 from Prabhsimran Singh and a solid 66 from captain Shreyas Iyer

After the match, Iyer spoke about the team’s confidence and how they are handling their position at the top of the points table.

“Certainly confident and optimistic going forward. The way we’ve been playing is phenomenal, at the same time we have our head on our shoulders,” said Shreyas in the post-match interview for the broadcasters. “We know each game we are going to come and it’s going to be important for us as a team. I’m glad today we got that comprehensive victory.”

Shreyas Iyer on his catch

In the first innings, Mumbai Indians looked set to post a huge score, with Quinton de Kock scoring a century and Naman Dhir playing aggressively in the middle overs. At one stage, they seemed headed well past 200.

However, a brilliant relay catch by Iyer near the boundary to dismiss Hardik Pandya changed the momentum. The effort helped slow down Mumbai’s scoring and brought Punjab back into the game.

When asked about the key moment that helped his team regain control, Iyer smiled and pointed to his own effort in the field.

“I think my catch. We’ve got this tendency of pulling things back, like against SRH. Negate the boundaries, don’t think too far ahead of the game,” Shreyas said while laughing.

Punjab’s chase did not begin smoothly, as they lost a couple of early wickets. But a strong partnership between Iyer and Prabhsimran steadied things. The two added over 120 runs together, taking the game away from Mumbai.

While Iyer played confidently as always, he was especially impressed with how Prabhsimran handled the situation and finished the match without getting out.

“He has raised his bar… he’s got that maturity to finish off the game. Great to see youngsters take responsibility and say I’m going to win the match for the team,” Shreyas said.

Setting totals next on the card

Punjab have been successful while chasing so far this season, winning multiple matches this way. However, Iyer admitted that batting first and defending totals will be the next challenge for the team.

“We haven’t decided [about setting totals]. I’ve been lucky to win tosses so far, and always ready for the challenge of batting first, ready to go out there and express ourselves,” explained the PBKS captain. “I personally feel you need to keep getting better every game, that’s the recipe we’ve been following so far,” he concluded.
